Kyokushinkan
The Kyokushin Karate-do federation Kyokushin-kan was established on January 13 2003, following the wishes of the late President Mas Oyama, the founder of Kyokushin karate.
As a martial art, we pursue karate by revising kihon(basics), kata(pattern), and buki(weapons) of karate. In our trainings, we emphasize on courtesy that modern Japanese are losing.
The trainings include movement training, kata analysis, introduction of traditional weapons techniques such as the Bo staff, Sai, Tonfa, and Nunchucks. We also incorporate elements of fists training using makiwara(rolled straw), sunabukuro(sandbag), and Chinese martial arts (Iken). There are a wide variety of training methods that we use in our trainings.
In Kyokushin Karate, matches are generally held in full contact. While strikes to the face are prohibited, with protective gears limited to groin guard and mouth guard (only for adults) in accordance to the rules, fighters approach each other anticipating attacks to the face, similar to real life situations.
9th Dan, Hanshi Shihan, Founder of Kyokushinkan
Born on March 31st, 1948 in Yago, Gyoda City, Saitama Prefecture, as the eldest son of five siblings. He has longed for martial arts since he was young, and in the fall of his first year in high school, he entered the Oyama Dojo in Ikebukuro.
He learnt the essence of the Kyokushin soul under many Kyokushin lions, including Sosai Masutatsu Oyama. After that, he practiced and mastered various martial arts.
He aims to unify the Kyokushin karate, taking over the Kyokushin Scholarship Foundation which is the only public interest corporation that Sosai Oyama has left behind.
岡崎 寛人 Kancho Okazaki Hiroto, 9th Dan, Hanshi Shihan
In 1973, Kancho Okazaki joined Kyokushinkaikan. Later in 1979, he joined Royama Dojo as an uchideshi.
Kancho Okazaki served as the Fukushima Branch Chief of Kyokushinkaikan before leaving the organization in December 2002. He was then appointed as the deputy general manager of Kyokushinkan.
On April 17 2022, he was appointed by President Umeda of the Kyokushin Scholarship Foundation, as the next Director of Kyokushinkan.
Shihan Koyama Akio, 9th Dan
Director of International Affairs and General Manager
In 1979, Shihan Koyama joined Kyokushinkaikan headquarter's dojo. Later on, he transferred to Royama Dojo. He was the first dormitory director of "Rozanpaku" uchideshi(stay-in students) dormitory.
Shihan Koyama served as the San'in Branch Chief of Kyokushinkaikan before leaving the organization. He is now the general manager of Kyokushinkan.
On April 17 2022, he was appointed by President Umeda of the Kyokushin Scholarship Foundation, as the Director of the International Headquarters of the Kyokushinkan.
Shihan Ishijima Masahide, 6th Dan, Kyoshi Shihan
Technical Director
Ishijima Masahide is the kata-category champion for the first Kyokushinkan World Tournament.
He consecutively won 4 times in the All Japan Tournament.
Traditional Training
Besides regular training for kihon, kata, and kumite, we also include traditional weapons usage in our training. Weapons that we use in training are the Bo staff, Sai, Tonfa, and Nunchucks.
Courtesy and Humility
While we train our minds and body daily, we emphasize on courtesy that modern society are losing, not only in training but also outside of training, such as greeting your elders and others, and saying “Osu” before stepping onto the tournament match area.
Internationally Recognized
Internationally recognized, we have over 190 branches in 73 countries around the world. Our branch chiefs regularly travel to Japan to keep up to date with the changes, so they are equipped to help and guide you in trainings.
